LDS Articles of Faith: 2

We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

I like this one. A lot. I think this belief is one strong reason I can't switch to many of the mainstream Christian beliefs.

I believe this Article of Faith truly and completely. I believe children are born pure and perfect. People's sins come from their own choices, and eventually they will have to pay for their wrongs.

On the flip side, I don't believe all hardships in life come from sin. I do believe the saying "What goes around comes around" but I don't believe in karma. I think that bad things can and do happen to good people and good things can and do happen to bad people. Being perfect doesn't protect you from pain and suffering.

You're absolutely right that good things happen to bad people and visa versa. I agree that not all suffering comes from sin. All suffering and sin does, however, come from the fall of Adam.
Christ's Atonement paid for the consequences of Adam and Eve's decision which removes the the chains of death both spiritual (sin) and physical, and pays the price for ALL pain and suffering. Thus we are all innocent until we have learned good from evil and can be held accountable. Pain and death are swallowed up in Christ. We will ALL be resurrected, the pains and sufferings we feel can be eased and comforted through relying on Him who is mighty to save and we will ALL be brought back into the presence of God (Judgement).
All this being true and common belief amongst any Christian religion. However, in the LDS faith we believe that we will not all REMAIN in the presence of God just because Jesus "saved" us. Only those who partake of the other portion of the Atonement and "work" or "earn" salvation by removing the Eternal consequences of sin through repentance and adherance to the commandments will be able to STAY in His presence and inherit all that He has. Christ truly paid the price of sin but we must all be active partakers of His atonement constantly if we wish to live with He and Heavenly Father.
